According to The Evictions Study, done by the University of Washington, “Evictions contribute to homelessness due to rising rents, the lack of affordable housing, and rent burden.”
Their numbers show that:
- Women are evicted 11% more than men
- Between 9% of Black adults and 17% of Black adults faced an eviction
Cities, counties, and states have adopted Just Cause evictions statues, requiring rental property owner to follow set guidelines. However, enforcement of these regulations requires local governments to monitor and if necessary, intercede with appropriate action.
Monitoring local evictions should include:
- A mandatory requirement that all evictions must be submitted to the appropriate city department(s)
- Compliance review of evictions needs to be conducted and noted on a case by case basis
- The information gathered will need to be analyzed to sport trends and take meaningful corrective actions
